Child’s Coat Zipper

I’m not an expert seamstress but I am a saver!  Not only do I like to save ‘stuff’ from the trash, but I like to save money.  I went to a thrift store the other day and found an almost new kids coat for only $5!!!  It just so happens my daughter needed a new coat and this one was perfect.  Not only is it a 2 piece but it’s 5000g coat.  I was so excited to find it that I forgot to REALLY check the coat over, including the zipper.  Much to my  “surprise”, I got it home, washed it, and realized the zipper was broken.  (That’s why it was so cheap!)

I have NEVER replaced a zipper before but I know how to work a sewing machine.  Really, how hard could this be?  I measured the size of the zipper and bought a seam ripper as well as a new jacket zipper.

I started out by taking the seam ripper and ripping to get the old zipper out.  I was careful not to rip the actual fabric of the coat with the ripper.  (Which I did anyways!)

Once I got one side off, I got the new zipper and pinned it in place.

I sewed on the new zipper on both sides and done!

This really only took me a little less than an hour.  I paid $5 for the coat and under $7 for a new zipper.  $12 and I have a brand new coat.  And I saved it from possible trash!  I did some research online and brand new this jacket was around $100 and sells on ebay for about $40.  I love a good deal!
